Fitness, Food and Photography

Follow me on my road to fitness… Because it's all about the journey, not the destination.

Last Things Thursday: 2/21/13

This is going to be a fun one.  Thursday was a super crazy day!

1. Last Food You Ate:

A protein bar and a coffee.  Yes, that was my dinner.  Let me explain.  I had only a limited amount of time from when I left work to when I had to meet Mom in Maryville to see my cousin in a play.  But tonight was my night to run, and I really needed to get my workout in.  So I changed quickly, went running, got a coffee afterwards (because I was cold), drove 30 minutes to Maryville, changed back into my dress and boots in the car, and made it to the lobby by 6:45.  No time for dinner.  But luckily, I had a protein bar in my purse!!

2. Last Beverage You Drank:

See previous question.  It was coffee.  And I’m thinking that drinking that much caffeine at 6:30pm was probably not the greatest idea I’ve ever had!!

3. Last workout:

4.2 miles at Lakeshore.  It wasn’t the fastest I’ve ever run.  I walked some too.  But I didn’t want to get too sweaty before the play.

4. Last thing You Pinned:

Oh goodness – I haven’t been on Pinterest in days.  Too busy  😦

5. Last text message you sent:

To hubby, of course.  I let him know when the play was over.  And that it was POURING and I had parked like a football field or two away from the building.  So I looked like a drowned rat when I got home!!

6. Last blog you visited:

Katie Moves.  I especially enjoyed reading her engagement story earlier in the week. Congratulations, Katie!!

7. Last place you visited:

The Clayton Center for the Arts at Maryville College (that’s where the play was).

8. Last show you watched:

Does the play count??  It was called ‘Hay Fever’ by Noel Coward.  It was set in England in the 1920’s.  The playwright himself described Hay Fever as “one of the most difficult plays to perform that I have encountered … it has no plot at all, and remarkably little action.”  So he even admitted there was no plot.  It was cute at times.  A little slow.  The actors were great.  Though, I think I missed some dialog based on the fact I couldn’t understand what they were saying in their fake British accents.

That’s my cousin, Gregg, sitting there at the table.

And us afterwards….

9. Last thing you baked:

Ack.  I just realized I haven’t baked anything since I did this survey last week.  Though, it’s just as well.  It took us days to finally finish that strawberry cake.  And I’d rather not have all that temptation sugar just sitting around the house.

10. Last photo you instagrammed:

Technically, the last photo I instagrammed was of my salad last night.  But since I shared that in yesterday’s WIAW post, I went a little further back to get my daughter dancing on the table:

Whew!  That was quite a day.  I left the house at 7:45am and arrived back home, exhausted, at 10:30pm.  Thankgoodness tomorrow is Friday!!!

PS – any other WordPress users out there??  Do you find that after you hit ‘Post’ that sometimes pictures or words just disappear???  It seems to happen almost every other time.  I have to remember to go back and reread my post after I publish, because more often that not, I have to hit ‘Edit’.  A little frustrating.

Mid-Week Motivation

I’m in need of a little motivation to get me through the rest of the week.  There’s so much on my To Do list that it’s a little overwhelming.  Sometimes this makes me more productive, and other times it simply paralyzes me, which is where I am right now.

I am stuck in a rut.  Maybe I just need a good workout.  Or maybe I just need a good sleep.  I don’t know exactly.  But I think it’s more than that.

I had a great talk with a friend yesterday about finding your passions in life.

I definitely know where my passions lie.  Now it’s just a matter of creating a plan to get where I want to be.

Life is too short not to do what you love.

Question of the day: are you chasing your passions or are you stuck in a rut? Are you doing what makes you happy? If no, why not??

What do you need to do to get where you want to be??

November Bulu Box Review

I have no idea why all my photos are sideways.  I apologize – you’ll have to tilt your head to see it.

What’s included:

Almased:  A metabolism booster which supports fat loss and ensures muscle retention.  It’s in powder form and you mix it with milk or water.  I chose water.  It’s supposed to be a meal replacement for weight loss or a supplement for wellness.  I was not a fan.

CocoaWell True Energy:  a pill that supposedly enhanced energy, fights fatigue and stress.  It’s hard to tell with only one pill if it works or not.

Crystal Essence Mineral Deodorant: a crystal-infused towelette.  I do have to say, this came in quite handy since I started running during my lunch hour.  It’s so nice to wipe the sweat off before putting work clothes back on!

Perky Jerky: a healthy satisfying snack flavored with guarana

FRS Healthy Energy Chews:  formulated with quercetin, a powerful all-natural antioxidant

I really wanted to like these FRS healthy energy chews, but the flavor was so weird.  It almost tasted like medicine halfway through the chew.  I might buy those again, but I wouldn’t get the pineapple mango.  (Which is crazy because I love love love pineapples).

The Perky Jerky, on the other hand, was awesome!!  Very tasty.  I could have eaten triple the amount they gave me in this sample.  YUM!!  I will definitely be buying this one.

I just have a few random things to share with you…

#1 – I always like to check out my blog stats.  I like seeing where my readers live, but more impotantly, what brought them to my blog.   Yesterday, there were a few different search engines that directed traffic my way.  Although, what’s disturbing is one of the search terms was “I’m giving up on life quotes”.  Is that really something that someone does a Google search on??  And I’m baffled as to why MY blog would come up if you’re giving up on life.  I would hope my blog does just the opposite.  I would hope that my blog motivates or inspires you to create the life you want.  Because that is what I am doing.

#2 – Our first Trader Joe’s just opened in my town this weekend.  If it’s possible to be in love with a grocery store, I am.  It’s only been open for 6 days and I’ve already been there three times!  I should have taken a picture right after my shopping trips because as soon as I came home with some of this stuff, it was gone immediately.  Here’s a pic of what’s left from my haul:

Their organic produce selection is good, but best of all, the prices are very reasonable.  Starting from the left, I found this interesting little seaweed snack.  What you can’t tell from the picture is that it’s wasabi flavor!  YUM!!  They are thin like tissue paper with a slight crunch, but a wonderful hot wasabi flavor.  They are just weird enough that I keep popping them in my mouth.  The package says they are good on salads, so I’m going to try that tomorrow.  Fig butter, need I say more??  I love all things fig!

The BEST thing that I’ve found so far is the Thai Chili Lime Cashews.  The flavor is awesome and there is just enough heat to make this girl happy!

Those fresh jalapenos are probably the HOTTEST jalapenos I’ve ever eaten!!  We’ve bought jalapenos from the farmer’s market all summer.  They were sweet and tasty, but never hot.  So my hubby got quite a surprise when he took a big bite out of one.  He was just about to cut them up to make these cream cheese filled jalapenos for a quick appetizer.

I also bought a few things for my foodie pen pal, but I didn’t put them in my picture.  You’ll just have to wait til the end of the month and read her blog to see what she got!  🙂

#3 – New Favorite Place.  On Saturday night, the hubs and I were able to sneak away for a couple of hours to have a date night while his dad watched the kids.  We discovered this new little place called Marlin & Rays.  They have THE BEST happy hour specials!  If you sit at the bar, the fish tacos and the beers are $2 each.  Or your can upgrade your beer to a Large for $0.99.  Yes, please!

I also tried the steamed mussels just for fun.  I’d never had them before and a plate was only $2.  Why not?  Well, now I know why not.  Ick.  I finally found a food I do not like.

Anyways, if you have a Marlin & Rays near you, I highly recommend it!  The grilled fish tacos are really good!!

#4 – I couldn’t help but post a few pics from the sunset the other night.  These photos have not even been retouched.

No photoshop necessary

That’s off my back deck.  Then, the very next night we watched a storm roll in…..

That’s all.  I’m done being random now.

You MUST watch this documentary!

I just finished watching the last part of a 4-part series called Weight of the Nation.
You can view it online for free here:

You can’t help but be outraged after watching it.  This country is in crisis.  Have you seen these charts produced by the CDC showing the percentages of obesity by states over the last few decades?  It’s startling.  (I would post them here, but I can’t copy and paste the charts so I’ll give you the link to watch the slideshow)

Why is America so fat??  There are many contributing factors, but it really boils down to the fact that we aren’t moving our bodies as much as we used to, or as much as we should be.  Kids are watching TV and playing video games instead of riding their bikes and playing outside.

And did you know that less than 2% of the farmland in the US grows fruits and vegetables.  That’s because the government gives a subsidy to those farmers who grow corn, but nothing to those who grow fruits and vegetables.  That corn is then used to make high fructose corn syrup, which is the cheapest type of sugar that companies can put into their pre-packaged foods.  Those large food manufacturers do not care about your health, they only care about their profits.

And if you really want to be outraged, watch the movie Food, Inc.  about how food is produced, and how the FDA and USDA control the food industry.  You can read more here:

I hope it motivates you to take a look at your diet and see what processed foods you can replace with organically grown fruits and vegetables.
