Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreign

on October 27, 2012

From WordPress:

Foreign. While foreign (rightly so) often brings up images of things outside of your own nation, it can also apply to things outside of or different from your normal environment, or even something which is out of place in general. I’m sure you’ll be able to find some great examples of this :)  My photo is from a recent trip to Bulgaria, where my inability to understand Cyrillic characters was one of the things which made *me* feel foreign.

Share a picture which means FOREIGN to you!

Now this one is a real challenge for me.  I’ve only ever been out of the country twice in my life, and both times it was to islands in the Caribbean.  Not really all that ‘foreign’.

The hubby and I love exploring, but it’s hard to go too far with small kids.

Earlier this year, we took a weekend trip to Helen, Georgia.  If you’ve never heard of Helen, it’s a super cute, quaint little German town in the mountains of North Georgia.

Enjoying German beer!

When in foreign land, ALWAYS play mini-golf. 🙂

I took about 1,000 photos that weekend.  I wish I could share them all with you.  This is just a small sampling of the ones that looked the most “foreign”.

I love Helen, Ga. Been giing there since 1974. Haven’t been there in 20 years or so though. Thanks for the memories. Also, in case you didn’t make it there, Unicoi State park near Helen is one of the South’s hidden gems.

    • Yes, we did visit Unicoi State Park! It was beautiful. Maybe I’ll do another post just with the pictures I took there. We also hiked to the top of Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia.

Hey that does look nicely foreign; a foreign town really close to home. You two look really sweet. Have you been to Germany/Austria?

    • No, we’ve never been to Germany, but we would LOVE to!! Hopefully one day! My husband is a lover of all things German – cars, food, beer, etc! His ultimate dream is to take ownership of a brand new BMW direct from the factory in Munich!

No way! My daughter and her partner Adam went to the Porsche factory in Germany just to have a look. One day that’s his dream too. 🙂

  8. Who knew? I haven’t seen much of Georgia, mostly state troopers in shades and wild boar along 95. This little town speaks to me. Toni

  9. Great shots – I could definitely go for some of that German beer!

    Hi Katie,

My name is Liz and I’m the design director at Atlanta magazine. I was wondering about possibly running one of your Helen, Georgia photos in our March issue. Please email me at lnoftle@atlantamagazine.com.

    Thanks!
